Through the Eyes of a Child

Although I’d been to the UK many times, it was like seeing it for the first time when I took my 9-year-old grandson on his initial visit. We were based in Oxford for a special Harry Potter program but had plenty of time for side trips.

For two weeks it was punting on the Isis, riding a steam train, banqueting in a college dining hall, and roaming the countryside. In London, he was thrilled with the top of a double-decker bus and cruising down the Thames to the Tower. There he loved the cannons, the Royal Jewels, and the ravens, but refused to have his picture taken with the Beefeaters. That was too tourist-like.

My husband and I have traveled to Mexico several times and decided that we wanted to experience the Yucatan Peninsula as free spirits.

We flew out of Minneapolis on a blustery January day. A direct flight to Cancun, we arrived 4 hours later to the warmth of the Mexican sun. We rented a car and headed south. Who would have thought that just hours before we were in below zero weather? We peeled off our winter clothes and we were feeling first hand the Kenny Chesney song “No shoes, No Shirt, No Problems!”

This past Spring I had the opportunity to visit my niece who is working with the JET program in Japan as a teacher. She invited her mother (my middle sister) and anyone in the family that wanted to for a visit. I was accompanied by my oldest sister, so the three of us who not gone farther than Canada, Mexico, or the Carribbean in our lives, set out for the long flight to Japan.

I had never been to Key West, Florida, so my first trip there was sure to be memorable. My boyfriend and I rode the Key West Express from Fort Myers, Florida, which was an enjoyable 4-hour boat ride to Key West and proved to be an amazing way to get to the Keys rather than driving down.

Cruisin’ Hawaii

My son & I went to Hawaii to visit Pearl Harbor. We rented a Mustang convertible. I had not driven a convertible since the days of manually pulling the top to put the roof back on! We were on our way to Pearl Harbor, driving with the top down & it began to rain. We had to stop for a red light, so thinking we should put the top back up so not to get drenched, I pushed the button to start the process. I did not realize that the roof STOPPED if the car was put in gear. The light turned green, and as we were the first car in line we had to go. The roof was straight up and down and of course, that is where it stayed as we drove down the street. There were plenty of spectators, due to a tour bus right along side of us in the next lane. We drove to the first street that we could turn off on and stopped. We finished putting the top on and went on our way. I told my 11 year old son, that we would never forget the memories made on that trip!

Out of the cold and into the Florida sun!

By March, we in cold, snowy Wisconsin are tired of shoveling snow, putting on our weight in extra clothing just to stay warm, and driving on roads that resemble bobsled slides. We’re sick of being cooped up and we’re sick of being cold. That’s why, when I received a phone call from my sister-in-law early in our marriage, saying they were taking a week’s vacation in Florida, I groaned, “You are SO lucky!”

Travel America the Beautiful!

A travel story by - Cherie L. Bob and I have been fortunate enough to have traveled to many beautiful spots around the world in our 36 years of marria…China, Japan, France, Italy, Mexico, Hawaii, and many cruises throughout the Caribbean; however, our favorite trip ever, was our cruise to Alaska. We flew Northwest Airlines to Anchorage, where we met up with our cruise representative. Traveling by bus to Seward, we were able to get our first glimpse of the amazing scenery and wildlife there. We stopped along the way at a wildlife reserve where we saw moose and black bears in their native environment. As we sailed the inside passage of Alaska, we thought we had seen it all, from pyramids to ancient gardens; from the Spanish steps to the ruins of Pompeii, but nothing had prepared us for the wonder of the Glacier National Park in our own Country’s state of Alaska! We sat on our balcony, speechless, as the great awe and splendor of it’s beauty surrounded us in an inexplicable silence, shattered by an occasional fierce crackling and crashing of ice breaking from the glacier. We spent a full day inside the park, huddled in our warm winter coats and rain gear, and covered in blankets out on our little balcony, unable to leave the sight for even a moment.

The Hawaiian sunsets are so gorgeous they actually take your breath away. The photo is a picture I took right outside a Hawaiian Island hotel room as the afternoon sun went down. I saw this beautiful sunset every day and was blown away each time. It is something I will never forget and decided to enlarge this picture to full-size and frame it.
